San Diego-based biotech is looking for a Manager of Downstream Process Development to lead the team of Downstream Process Scientists and Engineers.
Your duties!
- Manage and lead a team of process engineers, chemists, and technicians to assist with downstream process development and scale-up projects.
- Full responsibility for the downstream lab's environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) as well as all operational aspects, such as experimental planning/scheduling, budgeting, and equipment and instrumentation maintenance.
- Work with key R&D stakeholders and leadership to scope and plan initiatives for downstream separation and purification of fermentation-produced compounds.
- Identify and put into effect best practices in bioprocess development, downstream lab operations, and separation and purification research.
- Develop engineers and scientists through mentoring, coaching, and developing them; promote a culture of trust and innovation.
- Develop a team vision and increase downstream lab capabilities to allow for the most efficient and successful translation of biotechnology research and development into commercialization.
- Research and evaluate industry best practices, applicable technology, new inventions, and industry trends on a continuous basis.
- Collaborate with CMOs/CROs on technology transfer and process cross validation.
You should have an extensive knowledge of chemical and biological process development, slace up/down, optimization, and tech transfer.

- Strong leadership abilities in managing EH&S and the running of a chemical or biochemical R&D lab or pilot facility
- Ability to influence a diverse group of people, including senior management, R&D, colleagues, collaborators, and third-party contractors.
- Demonstrated success in conducting lab operations, developing, scaling up/down, and commercializing process technologies, as well as a solid technical foundation in separation and purification processes.
- Ability to understand the underlying causes of complicated issues and devise innovative solutions to them.
- Outstanding written and oral communication abilities.
- Self-starter with a strong sense of urgency who is highly motivated, high-energy, and has a "can-do" mindset.
